You aren’t going on an adventure, Walter is taking you on a trip, showing you around. And it is Walter who decides where you get to go next. It is Walter who made the plan to overthrow Logan. Story wise, it is Walter who knows all the people and helps you gather allies. For pretty much every new area you go to, Walter sets the initial pace for your exploration.

And this is evident even in the gameplay. Instead you are going on Walter’s adventure to see his favored prince/princess sit on the throne. And then this feeling continues on throughout the whole game and it creates this newer feeling that you are not going on your own adventure to fulfill your personal goals. So, by the time you leave the castle to start your adventure, you don’t really feel like you have to. You don’t know these people, the game just relies on your stock emotions to generate outrage at Logan but then it falls flat. You could argue that the hero wants revenge on Logan for killing your friend/SO or the protesters (depending on your choice) but the event is very melodramatic. But how you got there was completely up to you, and it felt like your decisions actually meant something about you as a character.įable 3 though? You are a very specific person doing a very specific thing, and for the most part you are not doing it for yourself. But there is still so much that is up to you, as a player, to decide for the hero of Oakvale.įable 2 was a lot simpler, Avenge your sister and buy castle fairfax. Yeah, you wanted revenge for the sacking of Oalvale, but is it a righteous revenge? Is it evil? That quickly changes to your character trying to become the strongest hero. In the first game, you were just a farm boy, but the premise still gave you a lot to go off of. While still interesting and relatively well written, the very premise of the story takes away all the intrigue and creativity that the previous two had. So that is why I thought the gameplay was nowhere near up to par when compared with the last two, but I think my biggest problem was with the story. I guess this is debatable, but in my opinion it just did not work as well. Next, I would say the Road to Rule also dumbed down and took out all the fun and planning of the level up system of the prior two games. I guess fable 2 started that but they took it pretty far in fable 3 dumbing down all the combat (removing the magic meter, no visible health bar, etc.)

We always want to make the sub better, so feel free to ask for flairs, CSS changes, more/less rules - whatever.įirstly, I would say there was a lack of challenge, as “dying” had no real consequences (you lose your progress toward the next guild seal, plus you get a scar).
